“TEDDY ORDEAL”

Television, production costs, entertainments tax — they are singly and collectively advanced as the reason for falling attendance at the cinema. To my mind, the single greatest factor is being ignored: the Teddy Boy menace.
A visit to the cinema used to be a treat. Now it has become an ordeal. These illiterate morons make a visit to the cinema something to think twice abont. Of course, the moronic type have always been with us but in the old days they usually confined themselves to the first few rows; but now, with more money than they know what to do with, they are to be found everywhere.
What family man today is going to take his wife and children to the cinema to risk his wife being insulted, his children hearing filthy language and himself being assaulted? I myself now only go to an afternoon performance of the cinema. It is the only way one can see a film in peace and catch any of the dialogue.
Might I also remind movie moguls that a cinema should show films, not try to rival the general stores with the sale of chocolate, ice-cream, popcorn, drinks, cigarettes and so on. Next’thing we will be having a “Frying Tonight” sign in the foyer.
Football clubs pay the Police to be on special duty to control the crowds during a football match — apply this to the cinema. The expense will soon be recouped at the box-office wrhen the customers’ confidence returns and they realise that they can once more look forward to an evening at the cinema.
