The  Planner’s  Retreat  would  be  an  apt  name  for  the  new  public  house  which  is  to  be  built  on  a  vacant  plot  of  ground  in Leicester’s  Highfields  district.  Highfields,  probably  the  city’s  largest  working-  class  conurbation  is  not  noted  for  its  open  spaces.

But  there  are  a  lot  of  pubs  and  drinking  clubs.  Until  recently  only  the  breweries  remembered  Highfields.

In  fact  from  the  vacant  plot  of  ground  which  is  on  the  new  St.  Peter’s  estate,  a  drinking  club  and  an  off-licence  can  be  seen  on  the  street  corner  less  than  100  yards  away.

From  the  corner  of  the  street  another  drinking  club  and  a  pub  come  into  sight.  And  a  walk  to  the  next  corner  brings  into  pano­ramic  view  yet  another  pub;  all  less  than  300  yards  away  from  the  open  ground.

Understandably,  local  tenants  feel  there  are  enough  pubs  in  the  area.  As  the  ground  is  next  to  a  new  senior  citizens’  home  and  a  community  centre,  also  with  its  own  bar  planned,  a  small  park  with  seats  might  be  more  appropriate  say  the  tenants.

But  even  though  the  Highbury  and  St.  Peter’s  Residents’  Asso­ciation  has  organised  a  petition  against  the  pub  as  w^Tell  as  picketing Leicester’s  town  hall,  the  council  has  not  informed  local  tenants  of  the  exact  situation.

According  to  the  city  estates  office  which  is  handling  the  matter,  a  pub  will  be  built  on  the  site.

So  the  council  and  breweries  together  appear  to  have  the  matter  well  in  hand  except  that  the  tenants  feel  their  wishes  should  come  before  those  of  the  brewers.
